A team of researchers has found that vitamin C may not only prevent the onset of sepsis, but also can reverse the disease.
According to Dr. Karel Tyml and colleagues at the University of Western Ontario and Lawson Health Research Institute, patients with severe sepsis has a high mortality rate, almost 40 percent, because there is no effective treatment.
Sepsis is caused by a bacterial infection that can begin anywhere in the body. Your immune system goes into saturation processes, overwhelming normal in the blood. The result is that the formation of blood clots blocking blood flow to vital organs.
"There are many facets of sepsis, but we've covered the last 10 years is the blockage of blood vessels," said Dr. Tyml.Plugged capillaries to prevent oxidation and the provision of life support materials in the body tissue and stop the removal of waste products of metabolism.
Plugged capillaries are seen as bodies of septic patients. These bodies may eventually fail, which is a multi-organ failure and death. Through his research, Dr. Tyml found that bolus administration of vitamin C injected into the initial moment of induction of sepsis, capillary to prevent clogging.
He also stated that the delay in bolus injection of vitamin C can reverse the move by restoring blood flow in the past related to the capillaries."Our study in mice with sepsis have shown that late already, and injections of vitamin C significantly improves survival," said Dr. Tyml.
"In addition to a beneficial effect of a bolus of vitamin C is a long term and to prevent the capillary that connects more than 24 hours after injection."Vitamin C is cheap and safe. Previous studies have shown that it can be injected intravenously into patients with no side effects," said Dr. Tyml.
